Finding The Hidden Coral Lagoon
Malta has a lot of beautiful places and natural wonders, but very often they are hidden and we have to go off the beaten path a little to be able to find them and appreciate them. I have been to the L-Ahrax area in Mellieha many times, because there is so much to see! I have visited the Slugs Bay, Chapel of Immaculate Conception and Marks and Dukes Window. Today I’m going to show you the way to the Coral Lagoon!
There are at least two ways how to get to Coral Lagoon. Either you can drive towards the Chapel of Immaculate Conception and turn left when you see the campsite sign. The last bit is quite bumpy and off road, so you might prefer to drive towards Armier Bay Beach instead and from there towards the Ahrax Tower / campsite.
Once you reach the campsite point, there is plenty of parking opportunities where you can leave your car. Now, you can take a moment to appreciate the gorgeous view of Comino.
This will be your view for a while as you have to walk uphill from where you left your car and it just seems like there is nothing interesting to see anywhere.
It only took like 5 mins to reach the top and at that point you get a distant view of the Coral Lagoon! I know, it still doesn’t look like anything special, but it will in just few moments. 🙂
And here we are! Sitting on top of the Coral Lagoon and enjoying this pretty unique site. I am sure you have seen a couple of pictures on the internet of people jumping from the cliffs into a lagoon… This is were those pictures were taken. I wish I was that brave! The water is crystal clear and there were couple of people snorkeling while I was in the area.
On the picture above, you can see me sitting down on the rocks and that gives you a good idea about how big the Coral Lagoon actually is. I am guessing it is about 10 – 15 meters high.
Here you can see a small entrance to the Coral Lagoon, so if you are an adventurous type, you can swim in and snorkel around, come in on a kayak or a stand-up-board and hang around in the lagoon. It was on my list this summer, but I haven’t managed unfortunately, so hopefully you will have more luck. 🙂
Here is a spectacular view of the entrance to the Crystal Lagoon from the other side. I just love places like this. I just sit down for a moment and think of how the sea water was forming these beautiful rocks into this gorgeous master piece. Even when I walked around the Coral Lagoon, I felt like I was walking on the Moon, well that’s what the surface reminded me of anyway.
Below you can see the exact location of the Coral Lagoon. Also, looking at the satellite photo of the area, what does it remind you of? It looks like a chicken or a bird to me, with the Coral Lagoon being its eye. What do you think? 🙂
