Take a sculpture workshop in Valletta
Is there an artist hiding inside you? Maybe you just want to try something different? For tourists and locals alike, a crush course in sculpture could be the perfect experience for you! And because I would never recommend anything that I didn’t try before, I met with Amelia Saint George to see for myself.
Amelia Saint George is an established contemporary animal and wildlife sculptor. She has been exhibiting internationally with a growing number of international buyers. Her studio is located just a minute away from the Parliament building in Valletta. It’s a small but cosy and naturally bring studio.
This time I brought with me my colleague Kriza. The aim of this experience was to get comfortable with the clay medium and discover our hidden talents. I should also mention that it is mentally very relaxing activity, which after a week of work is exactly that I need.
Amelia is lovely lady that makes you feel comfortable and yet confident even when you have no previous experience. She showed us how clay works and how we need to handle it to be able to create our desire sculpture. You can make anything really. After looking around her studio we got inspired to make a little face sculptures.
When I got my piece of clay I was just pressing it and squeezing it to get used to the material. I wasn’t very patient at the beginning to be fair as even to reach the shape of a head took me a while. I kind of had to realize that it’s not a race (like everything else in life) and it needs time.
Once the sculpture starts taking shape that’s when you start getting truly excited! Or at least I did! That was the moment when I started to really enjoy this process. Plus you are spending your time in a small group (max 4 people) of like minded people, having a laugh and sipping tea or something bubbly.
I don’t know how about you, but I find this creative process very awarding. It’s like out of nothing you make something. Immediate result. I think we all know the feeling when we work on a task at work for hours, days or weeks and see no results. This is the complete opposite.
I mean look at these sculptures! How cool are they? And you know what’s the best thing? You can just take your creation home that same day! It doesn’t have to be treated in any way, so you can just carefully take it home and it will try and harden on its own.
Just in case you haven’t finished it or you wish to continue it at home after looking at it with fresh eyes you can do that too! Just wrap it in a plastic bag so the clay won’t start drying up, get home, unpack it and continue working on your master piece.
And here we are, two very happy students with Amelia Saint George – very talented artist and super patient teacher.
Also don’t forget to look around her studio! It’s like a small gallery, which showcases some of her work and you can also purchase her art if you wish.
