Visiting Ta’ Kola Windmill
Ta’ Kola Windmill is just few metres away from the Ggantija temples in Xaghra, Gozo. It is one of the few surviving windmills dating back to the Knight’s Period.
The last miller of Ta’ Kola Windmill was Guzeppi Grech also known as Zeppu Kola. He was born on 12th April 1900 and he took over the running of this windmill after his father’s death in 1926. During the years 1939 – 1942 Mr Grech repaired various abandoned mills during World War II when steam-driven mills stopped working due to lack of fuel. Guzeppi Grech was a hardworking man who despite being illiterate was a master of all trades.
On the ground floor one can observe the workshop premises contacting a vast selection of tools. The miller lived on the first floor and visitors can walk through his kitchen, dining room and bedrooms. The round central tower is also accessible to admire the milling machinery.
It is a great place to visit if you would like to get a glimpse of the traditional rural life of Gozo in the past centuries.
